Ruby’s Accessible Home – Built for Independence
Following a road traffic accident in August 2021, our client Ruby sustained severe injuries, including the amputation of her right leg, reconstruction of her left leg, and injuries to her spine and pelvis.
At just 24 years old and on maternity leave with her six-month-old son, Leon, Ruby’s primary goal was to regain her mobility, restore her social life, and live independently so she could care for her son without relying on others.
After completing 9 months of intensive rehabilitation at STEPS Rehabilitation and equipped with a prosthetic leg from STEPS Prosthetics, Ruby was ready to return home.
However, her existing house was unsuitable for her new needs, as it has steep stairs, narrow doorways, challenging access points, and a galley kitchen. Recognising the urgency of Ruby’s situation, her Case Manager, Lauren McCluskey, completed an Independent Needs Assessment (INA), and identified that an adapted property was essential for her long-term independence.
After an extensive search, Ruby found a suitable property that could be adapted to accommodate her needs.
This property was ideally located in the area where she had grown up and was keen to remain, close to Leon’s nursery and future school catchment areas, as well as her support network of family and friends.
In November 2022, Ruby instructed Steven Docker Associates (SDA) to assess the property and develop adaptation plans that would facilitate her independence. Greg Stanfield, an SDA architectural designer and project manager, began working closely with Ruby to create a design that accommodated her unique requirements.
The Result
The adaptation of Ruby’s new house is set to transform it into a functional, modern space that enables independence while also creating a safe, family home for her and Leon. From the very beginning, Ruby has been actively involved in the process, reviewing plans and communicating her specific needs to the team.
The SDA team has worked closely with her at every stage, ensuring that the home is tailored to suit both her and Leon. This collaborative approach not only addresses Ruby’s immediate requirements but also future proofs the house to accommodate any evolving needs that she may have in the future.
The construction began on the property in September 2024, with an expected completion date in Spring 2025. This project not only aims to meet Ruby’s immediate needs but also incorporates future-proofing elements to ensure the home can evolve with her and Leon.
Through close collaboration between Ruby, her case manager, and the SDA team, the home meets Ruby’s needs and personal preferences.
With Steven Docker Associates’ expertise, Ruby is set to enjoy a safe and comfortable home that enables her to live independently and happily with her son.
What are the key features?
- Level Access: The property will be modified to ensure level access at the front and rear entrances, with low-level thresholds for ease of entry. The drive will be regraded to accommodate a vehicle. This will be essential as Ruby is keen to learn to drive. There will also be a sliding gate for security.
- Open Plan Living: The design maintains an open-plan layout that enhances space and movement. Doorways will be widened, and the kitchen will feature height-adjustable worktops, allowing Ruby to use it comfortably whether standing or for the times when she is having a rest from her leg and in her wheelchair.
- Lift Installation: A discreet through-floor lift will be installed, providing Ruby with access to all three levels of the home. This critical feature ensures she can care for Leon easily and access all areas of the house.
- Adapted Rooms: The en-suite shower room from the master bedroom will be designed with level access, while a larger family bathroom will accommodate Ruby’s needs and allow for independent care of Leon.
- Therapy Room: The upper floor will be a therapy space, complete with a Juliette balcony offering stunning sea views, designed for ongoing rehabilitation and therapy sessions.
- Modern Design: The design prioritises a modern aesthetic, avoiding clinical finishes while still being fully functional for Ruby’s needs as an amputee.
- Accessible Garden: A large accessible garden will also be created, complete with a ramp for wheelchair access throughout, ensuring a safe outdoor space for both Ruby and Leon.
